ANDROID smartphone fans have been put on alert after security experts dealt users of the hugely popular Google mobile OS bad.

Android users have been dealt some bad news by security experts.
Android is without a doubt one of the most used pieces of software in the world, with the Google mobile OS powering swathes of smartphones.

It’s used by more than two billion active devices each and every month, with a large proportion running older versions of Android.
This opens Android users up to security risks that get patched out in later versions, something underlined by a number of high-profile attacks recently.
The biggest of which was the Judy malware campaign which targeted up to 36.5million Android devices with malware spread via the Google Play Store.
And now Android fans have been put on alert once again by security experts about the malware risk their phones are facing.

The latest warning comes courtesy of security experts that penned the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report 2019.
This report looked at the devices most likely to be hit with a malware attack.
And Android devices came out top, with these gadgets making up 47.15 per cent of the observed malware infections.
This was ahead of Windows on 35.82 per cent while only 0.85 per cent of Apple iPhones were affected, according to a post by Droidmen.
In their report Nokia security experts said: “In 2018 Android based devices are once more the main target in mobile networks.
“In the smartphone sector, the vast majority of malware is currently distributed as trojanized applications.

“The user is tricked by phishing, advertising or other social engineering into downloading and installing the application.
“The main reason that the Android platform is targeted, is the fact that once side-loading is enabled, Android applications can be downloaded from just about anywhere.
“In contrast, iPhone applications are for the most part limited to one source, the Apple Store.
“Windows/PCs continue to be a target for malware infection.

“These Windows/PCs are connected to the mobile network using USB dongles and mobile Wi-Fi devices or simply tethered through smartphones.
“They are responsible for 36 per cent of the malware infections observed.
“This is because these devices are still a popular target for professional cybercriminals who have a huge investment in the Windows malware ecosystem.”
The Nokia report added that their database of Android malware samples is now close to the staggering figure of 20million.

This is a big increase of 31 per cent compared to last year.
The Nokia report also pinpointed the top 20 Android malware detections for 2018.

The Nokia report used data aggregated from service provider networks where Nokia’s NetGuard Endpoint Security solution is deployed.

This solution is used in networks around the world, monitoring network traffic from more than 150million devices.
